It’s Funny Because It’s True

Several years ago, I had a roommate named Tim. Whenever we’d share a laugh over something absurd, Tim would say: "It’s funny…because it’s true."

Well, in the funny-but-true category — especially in light of yesterday’s revelation about the NSA snooping on people’s phone calls — are these message pads designed by PosseComment@US:

In this case, the picture really says it all. Don’t forget to call back!

We intend the comments portion of this blog to be a forum where you can freely express your views on blog postings and on comments made by other people. Given that, please understand that you are responsible for the material you post on the comments portion of this blog. The only postings that we ask that you refrain from posting and that we cannot permit on our website are postings that could cause ACLU to incur legal liability.

One important law in that regard is the prohibition on politically partisan activity. Given our nonprofit status, we may not endorse or oppose candidates for elective office. That means we cannot host comments on our site that show a preference for one candidate or party. Although we in no way wish to discourage you from that activity elsewhere, we ask that you not engage in that activity on our website (or include links to other websites that do so). Additionally, given that we are subject to very specific rules concerning the collection of personally identifying information through our website (names, email addresses, home address, financial information, etc.), we ask that you not use the comments portion of this blog to solicit this information from users of our website. We also ask that you not use the comments portion for advertising, and do not add to your comment links to other websites, as we cannot be responsible for the content on other websites. Suzanne,

    Missing in the “While you were out” bit of satire, was a check box for “Republican.”

    The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is using the federal wiretap of Senator Stevens — the same phone recording that was introduced in his trial by the corrupt, exculpatory evidence suppressing prosecutors — in their campaign ads against Ted Stevens.

    Last time I checked, Americans — including folks from Alaska — are innocent until proven guilty. But evidently that does not matter to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee; they are more than happy to use selective bits of secretly recorded phone conversations by the F.B.I., subsequently introduced at trial, to influence our nation’s political process.

    Suzanne, aren’t you a bit perplexed by the historical myopia of the satirical piece you posted? Implicit in the piece is the notion that Democrats are clean on the issue of wiretapping, while Republicans have the dirty hands. Yet it was the Democratic controlled Congress that passed the FISA Amendments Act that the A.C.L.U. is now challenging. And it is the DSCC that is now using a secretly recorded phone conversation conducted by the F.B.I. in an attempt to influence an election in the legislative branch.

    Suzanne, what is the A.C.L.U. going to do to inform well-meaning people, like the creator of that bit of satire, that political use of secretly recorded phone conversations by the government is, and has been, a bipartisan affair in our country?

    Like Timothy R. infers, are you saying that there is avidence of someone using this method (which is a wrong thing to use) or is there “See what they do and we don’t?” It may a joke in poor taste but that doesn’t show guilt of action. If the ACLU is actually devoted to truth the agency wouldn’t have been started by the originators nor would anyone be afraid of being coerced by your distortions of American law. Stop the Republicans of any and all truly illegal practice and don’t forget the moral responsibilty to enforce real law on all. Thank you.

  6. ondelette Says:

    No, Timothy, implicit in that check box is that George Bush does not trust Democrats, and that is all.

    !st, off topic, I’ve lost my ACLU card and I require this on my person because of what I do, nowhere to get a new one?
    Thanks

    re;H.R.6304
    Prior to this passing I argued with one of my Senators, either he is a complete idiot or his condescension equals I am that idiot. I know, my husband is from Turkey, we follow al-Islam,we call Turkey frequently. I told Bob Casey Jr. that his YEA was a death knell for me. He said, “NO, we CANNOT tap US Citizens, blah blah.”, I replied, “Either you haven’t done your homework or you haven’t a clue!, I again explained, “It was on pg 32, ‘TITLE VII–ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES REGARDING CERTAIN PERSONS OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
    “SEC. 702. “(b) LIMITATIONS
    “(3) may not INTENTIONALLY target a US person reasonably believed to be located outside the US;
    Anybody care to share thr definition of “Intentionally”?
    ‘Sec.703. Certain acquisitions inside the US targeting IS persons outside the US.
    ‘Sec.704. Other acquisitions targeting US persons outside the US;

    Then Unreasonable Search and Siezure. Look at the RNC and the Debate at Hofstra Jack booted thugs, do with us as they will, now Active Duty troops deployed!
    You tell me what the heck I am able to do to litigate this or protect myself? Nothing, absolutement’ nothing….
